about my work

Inspirations. I draw inspiration from many sources - travel, nature observation, study of historic art surveys, visits to gallery and museum exhibitions - in effect from anything visual that piques my creative curiosity or technical ambition. Sometimes, it is beauty that inspires, sometimes an inherent design quality, sometimes oddity, and sometimes juxtaposition of elements occurring almost inadvertently.

Subject matter. Subject matter has tended to evolve over time in terms of its interest for me. As a boy, I drew the usual things - wagon trains, cowboys and Indians, pirates, ships, trains, rockets, space ships. Moving things, action stuff. Later, I began to draw buildings, anything architectural. And always lots of cartoons and cartoon characters. Only later did I become interested in doing landscapes and seascapes. For the last couple of years, I've enjoyed getting into more-abstract visual expression, probably because of my growing interest in the nature of light as part of the subject matter.

Aims. Some artists create to elicit reactions from viewers and patrons, others to record something that pleases, disturbs, or even obsesses them. I've done both. Some of my work is done primarily to share beauty or interest with others. Other work is prompted by my desire to experiment. I am particularly intrigued with the nature of light and how to capture it as both evanescence and source of continuity serving as backdrop for everything else.

Outputs. I enjoy creating in many sizes and media. Like most artists, I go through phases where I experiment for months with one medium or another, simply because I am working through certain approaches or concepts. Occasionally, I'll work on pieces in several different media simultaneously. My creative interest is not so much in generating X number of one kind of work or another, but rather in finding what seems to me the appropriate way to share the impulse that prompted me to do the work in the first place.

what I hope others find in my work ...

I hope that others look at what I've done and experience the shock of recognition, a sense of "I know that scene, or feeling, or mood." It would please me very much if that reaction went further, to prompt the viewer to become immersed in the personal experience in a way that extends any impact my work has achieved.
